What is the difference between a Havanese and Tibetan Terrier?

Posted on May 7th, 2010 by admin

My wife and I recently rescued a Havanese puppy, but we think it may actually be a Tibetan Terrier. How can we tell the difference?

A Havanese will USUALLY be under 11 1/2 inches at the shoulder when fully grown, tibetans can reach 16 or more if they go oversize.
Tibetans are a little more "serious" than a Havanese, which is a very quirky, happy little breed.
Here are two websites you can use for comparison.

Havanese are small dogs, usually smaller than 12" at the shoulder. TTs are a little larger. They are longer on leg.

If you rescued the dog, there is a good chance it’s not a purebred. You can’t really know for sure unless you have the papers. Purebred Havanese and TTs are not very common, so aren’t as likely to end up in shelters as a Lab or Golden. You can maybe email pictures to breeders of Havs or TTs and get their opinion.
